[Long Post Warning]
After 6 years of almost non-stop touring, my main Boss Lady for over 6 years, MØ, is taking a long awaited and insanely well deserved break from touring and this has prompted family, friends and some colleagues to ask me what I’m going to be doing next.
The answer isn’t as simple as it would have been those 6 years ago.
6 years ago I would have jumped at the opportunity to step right onto another tour or production that would allow me to go out and practice the craft that I hold so dear. My beautiful wife would, yet again, lovingly understand, support and celebrate the outrageous good fortune I have, spending my working life doing one of the things I love doing and getting paid to boot.
6 years ago I would comfortably sacrifice my social life, sleep, diet and spare time to sit in a middle seat on a plane in Economy on Iberia Airlines to go to that next venue – to take on that next great challenge.
I wanted to play Lollapalooza. Coachella. Roundhouse. Tokyo. Rio. New York.
Karen (MØ) made that dream come true for me and can never thank her enough. She took us everywhere. Small, large and positively gigantic. I got to apply every bit of knowledge and experience of the work that I had accumulated in my life up to that point.
I love it. The huge technical challenges getting the shows on, the eternally adding +100XP boost to my knowledge rating, the opportunity to let myself be inspired by (or downright plagiarise from) legends in my field, meeting the impressive people who create all our wonderful tools and the people that run the venues and PAs all over the world, rubbing shoulders with audio royalty at festivals, the amazing artists and the incredible experiences that all these places always held for an avid music and audio fan-boi.
But ultimately, all of these wonderful moments were for me alone to enjoy, even though I shared a lot of them with a bunch of great girls and boys.
So, 6 years on, after the Bucket List has been well and truly crossed off over and again, where am I now ?
In short: Better at my job than I will perhaps ever be.
(I am definitely better at my job than I’ve ever been at any point in the past. I’m thinking perhaps mid-level Premier League/NBA/[insert preferable sports analogy] good – not lift-the-trophy good, but good enough to stay in the game, you know ? BTW – Still need to play MSG, NYC for the full Bucket List Bingo.)
Now, I don’t mean all that in a “Blowing my own horn” way – Bill Withers once said that as you travel on the path towards “Great” and you get to “Pretty Good”, you should get off and familiarise yourself with the area, because that’s how far most of us ever get, so you may as well get comfortable there.
My old self would never have settled for that stop on the line, but then again, my old self wasn’t a Dad yet.
All I’m saying is that, I might not get any better than this and I’m weirdly OK with that.
6 years brought major changes to the makeup of my family unit. In 2015 we had Josephine, our beautiful daughter who is smarter, funnier and more beautiful than I could ever be (she takes after her awe-inspiring and mega patient mum) and only 4 months ago, Anton, my handsome little dude and evil twin joined us.
Catherine (my wife, for those of you that haven’t been keeping score) has patiently been taking care of our kids and the home life, putting all other things aside in the service of our family and keeping me mobile and able to work so much away from home.
Now we need to find some kind of balance – for the family.
My 30 years in Audio has left me with a Design Portfolio the size and heft of a pretentious coffee table book and I will be spending some time making sure that some of those ideas make it into hardware and software coming to a store near you sometime in the future.
I will soon be available to create, design and develop ideas and products, so if you need that kind of thing, please don’t hesitate to get in touch – I am sure my Book Of Awesome has something in it for you too.
Conclusion
Nothing really changes in the types of work that I do, but you might find me spending more time in my own bed and less time in tour bunks. I will still play, record, produce, mix, teach, consult, design and generally help anyone that needs it.
Currently, I’m recording with dear old friends as well as prepping for an exciting show production at the end of the year and plotting how to sleep more nights in my own bed.
I hope 2020 is a year of great changes.
I dream that they are good changes with lots of love, work and collective/individual growth.
